Discernment Groups for Men and Women

If you are looking to deepen your relationship with Christ, having the support from a discernment group and friendship with other young people who are discerning their vocation can give you the focus and direction you need. Take a look at the following list of discernment groups taking place throughout England and Wales.

COMPASS (Based in Sussex and Manchester and open to young adults from throughout the UK)
Compass is a residential programme for those who are discerning whether they are called to religious life. Over the course of the year, the variety of religious orders and the meaning of the vows are explored. Prayer and times of silence are an integral part of the programme, and those taking part all receive regular individual spiritual guidance.

There are currently two Compass groups in England, based at Worth Abbey in Sussex and at Katherine House in Manchester. Both groups are for Catholics aged between 20 and 35.

Compass South: The annual programme starts in September, running over 9 weekends and Holy Week, and ends in May. All meetings take place at Worth Abbey.

Compass North: The programme is based mainly in Katherine House FCJ in Salford with one weekend at Our Lady of Hyning Monastery, Carnforth. The programme is based over four weekends in November, December, January and March, and culminates with Holy Week at Worth Abbey.

The Life Choice programme is based on a personal and group discovery of the Word of God (Lectio Divina) and how attention to the Word always brings Life: inner transformation directing life steps and decision. Sometimes we cannot change any of the circumstances of our lives, but a ‘life choice’ opens ways of seeing, loving and being.

Samuel Groups (Taking place in a number of dioceses)
Samuel Groups are for single young adults (18-30s), who are wondering what God is calling them to do with their lives. The aim is to help participants discern their direction in life, whether this is to marriage or dedicated single life, to priesthood or consecrated life. It would also suit those who are making decisions about their career, or about spending time as a missionary or volunteer.

Participants take time to listen to God and to His Word speaking to their life. They commit to attending monthly meetings with the group (within an academic year) and to meeting individually with a spiritual guide on a monthly basis. The principle aim of Samuel groups is that participants end the programme with a clearer view of God's call for their life.

This group is for men and women in their 20s and 30s seeking their path in life and meets on the 4th Friday of each month 7-9pm in the Hinsley Room, Morpeth Terrace, next to Westminster Cathedral.

The group is continuing their new series of talks entitled "Drawing from the wells..." in which they explore the essential contribution of different Catholic spiritual traditions from the Augustinians, Benedictines, Franciscans, Carmelites and Dominicans to the riches of the new movements such as Youth 2000, Opus Die, the Neo-Cathechumenal Way and the Faith Movement. What is the lasting contribution to the Church of each of these traditions and how can we each benefit from this for our own individual journey of discernment?
