The Superior General’s annual Appeal

  To all the members of the Saint John of God Family

Dear Brothers, Co-workers and Members of the Hospitaller Family of Saint John of God

I am writing to you all as Members of our Hospitaller Family of Saint John, to present to you the cooperation project for 2014, and to seek your support and solidarity.

And I am doing so around the Feast of our Founder, which always offers us a fresh opportunity to renew and give a fresh impetus to our mission of Hospitality in the manner and spirit of Saint John of God, particularly this year, in which we are celebrating the Provincial Chapters throughout the Order.

I should like to announce the results of the 2013 campaign for the ?Construction of a Community Health Centre at  Amrahia? Accra  (Ghana)?. Altogether we raised 305,989.38 euro, thanks to your efforts and your generosity, for which I wish to offer you my most heartfelt thanks.

The Superior General’s proposal for 2014 is for the following project;

?The refurbishment of the Saint John of God Psychiatric Institute at Cochabamba(Bolivia):

Mother-and-Child Units (psycho-pedagogical)?

In many parts of the world where we are performing our mission, the economic/financial crisis continues to bite hard.  And yet I am still appealing to you all, knowing perfectly well that I am asking you to make a new effort, mindful also of the fact that your Provinces and Centres receive other requests every day, sometimes for urgent reasons.

 Itis for this reason that we must never forget our duty to enhance our solidarity and cooperation with the less well-off parts of the Order as a renewed sign of our generosity and Hospitality; and we have an image of what this means, in particular, in the figure of our Brother St Benedict  Menni, the Centenary of whose death we are commemorating in 2014. In his difficult times, there were many very similar crises and difficulties to those we are facing today, and yet he managed to encourage the establishment of new centres, new ways of practising Hospitality and of being Hospitality, giving rise to new vocations to serve those who are suffering.

 Let us take this as a commitment to revitalise and foster communion and universality throughout the Order by helping the less favoured countries, because ALL TOGETHER WE CAN.

 I am, however, mindful of the fact that we have never ceased to help specific cooperation projects with other entities within the Order, through Twinnings, International Voluntary Service, and other forms of cooperation.

 I am attaching to this letter, as is our custom every year, a more detailed account of what we are setting out to support thanks to this appeal. The Missions and International Cooperation Office is at your entire disposal for any further information you may require to help, support or coordinate any initiatives that you might wish to take, by organising particular activities or events for the purposes of this appeal.

 Lastly, on behalf of the Southern South American Province, the Missions and International Cooperation Office, the General Government, and on my own personal behalf, I wish to thank you all in advance for your customary generosity and for the support that you always lend theOrder to help meet particular needs, and also because I know the sadness felt by our Founder ?seeing so many poor brothers and neighbours suffering from so many needs, both physical and spiritual?[1][1].

 United with you in Our Lord and in Saint John of God,

With fraternal good wishes,

Bro. Jesús Etayo

Superior General
