Solemnity of St John of God in Lunsar (Sierra Leone)

The Hospitaller Family in Sierra Leone celebrated the Solemnity of our Founder ,united with the worldwide Hospitaller Family of Saint John of God, in a particular way this year.  Preceded by the novena and a series of talks on the life of Saint John of God, the ceremony ended with a solemn Eucharistic celebration in the afternoon animated by the “The children of St John of God” choir.

It was a great opportunity to give thanks to our Lord for the many graces received through the intercession of St John of God, and for not having abandoned us during the Ebola epidemic which, despite encouraging signs of improvement, has not yet been beaten (6 cases throughout the whole country on March 8th).

On the day itself, Mass was celebrated at 8.30 in the morning with the whole parish community of Mabesseneh in the church dedicated to our Father Founder, before a congregation of over 500, who called on our Saint to protect the population of Lunsar stricken by the Ebola virus.  All the Religious communities gathered round the Brothers and Co-workers expressing their solidarity and thanking the Brothers of St John of God for the commitment they had demonstrated, especially through their work to combat the virus. One particularly moving moment was the commemoration of the members of the Hospitaller Family of Lunsar who had given their lives to look after their patients, and particularly Brother Manuel Viejo.

The ceremony ended with a fraternal agape, at which the Hospitaller Family reiterated its will to “let Hospitality command” by placing ourselves at the service of the poor, the sick and the needy in Sierra Leone and elsewhere.
