31st World Youth Day

As the Order had done previously for the 2011 World Youth Day in Madrid, we shall be organising an international meeting of young Hospitallers once again at next year’s WYD in Kraków. The Order’s Europe Commission has examined and approved the idea several times already. The first meeting in preparation for the event was held on 26-28 April, 2015 in Kraków, attended by the following members:

Brother Eugeniusz Kret, Provincial of the Polish Province which will be hosting the event

Brother Rudolf Knopp, GeneralCouncillor, Europe Commission, Germany

Brother Benigno Ramos, GeneralCouncillor, Europe Commission, Spain
Brother Luis Marzo, member of the Europe’s subcommission on formation and the pastoral care of vocations and vocations promotion,
Spain, Aragon Province
Brother Lukas Dmowski, Scholastics Master with responsibility for initial formation, Polish Province. Marek Krobicki, Director of the Brothers of St John of God Centre at Zielona, Poland

The main points examined and discussed at the meeting may be summarised as follows:

-    Aninternational working group will be set up to prepare the meeting with about 15 members from Poland, Germany, Austria and Spain

-    The Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be invited to take part in the event.

-    After examining and discussing various localities near Krakow, the meeting came downin favour of Zielona, near Krakow, where the Order has a centre for people with disabilities,

-    Taking a lead from the theme of 2016 World Youth Day, it was decided that the keyword for the international meeting of Young Hospitallers in Kraków would be: Mercy

-    The meeting will last one week, arriving on July 24, 2016. The Young Hospitallers’ meeting will be held from 25 to July 27, 2016. On the afternoon of July 27, 2016 the Young Hospitallers will take part in the World Youth Day programme. The departure date will be August 1, 2016.

-    The official languages for the Young Hospitallers’ meeting will be Polish, English and Spanish.

-    The official invitations will be sent to the Provinces in September 2015.

-    Since the Polish Province cannot afford to pay all the costs of the event unaided, the Provincial is relying on help from the other European Provinces.

-    The aforementioned working group will be set up as soon as possible so that the preparatory work can begin promptly.

Despite a very full agenda, the participants were able to visit the hospitals of the Brothers of St John of God at Kraków and Katowice, as well as the Polish National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa. As always, the Polish Brothers laid on a splendid welcome for all.
