Brothers of St John of God Win Princess of Asturia's Award For Concord

The 2015 Princess of Asturias Award for Concord has gone to the Catholic religious order the Brothers Hospitallers of St John of God.

These awards are made to to individuals, entities or organizations from around the world who make notable achievements in the sciences, humanities, and public affairs.

The Princesa de Asturias Foundation jury chose the Order from among 27 candidates of 26 different nationalities as a tribute to its work of caring for the most needy for over five centuries. In his announcement the president of the jury, Javier Fernandez Fernandez said: “in more than 50 countries the order focuses on the difficult times the world is living through; in such sensitive issues as the Ebola epidemic, the migrant crisis and, in general, the protection of the most disadvantaged and those at risk of social exclusion.”   Two Spanish citizens were among 16 staff members of St John of God Hospitals in Sierre Leone and Liberia to have died during the outbreak. Their deaths were a poignant reminder of the order’s devotion to the health needs of the poor down through the centuries.

The Prior General, Brother Jesús Etayo, said, “It is an award which pays tribute to all those whom our institution cares for throughout the world. Many of them are threatened by social exclusion and a high degree of social vulnerability, including people suffering from sickness, substance dependence, homelessness, immigrants, people with disabilities and the aged."
