Hospitaller Brothers and the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd

The General Chapter of the Brothers of St John of God, celebrated in autumn 2012 at Fatima, resolved to proceed with the merger between our Order and the Congregation of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd. The Little Brothers had already endorsed a similar decision at their General Chapter held in the summer of 2012. For several years the two Institutes had been in contact and had held informal meetings to discuss the eventuality of a merger.

On 4 and 5 December representatives of the two Institutes met at Hamilton in Canada in order to set in motion the merger process. It was attended by members of both Institutes from Canada, Ireland and the United States. The General Curia was represented by the General Councillors, Bro. Rudolf Knopp and Bro. Benigno Ramos. In addition to resolving a number of technical aspects relating to the merger, above all the meeting laid down the method to be followed for the process. It was decided that a steering group would be established comprising three members from each Institute. This group would define the individual steps to be followed for the merger, and the responsibilities on each side. Two commissions would be set up, one to address matters relating to “Religious Life” and the other to deal with “Mission and Centres”. The members of the steering group would meet for the first time on January 31-February 1, 2013 in New Jersey / USA.

The Congregation of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd currently has a membership of 30 Brothers in Canada, the United States, England, Ireland and Haiti.
