Beatification of St John of God Martyrs at Tarragona, Spain

Three days of great celebrations have been held at Tarragona (Barcelona) in Spain for the Beatification of 522 Martyrs (bishops, priests, religious and lay men and women) during the religious persecution in Spain. The Brothers and Communities of the participants from the Order of St John of God (about 550) gathered at the end of the celebrations on Monday, October 14 for a Mass of Thanksgiving in the Chapel of the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu at Sant Boi de Llobregat in Barcelona, where the remains of 9 Martyrs were laid to rest.

Vocations to religious life in England and Wales have tripled in just eight years, revised figures show. Last year 64 people joined a religious congregation, compared to just 19 in 2004. The number is at its highest level since 1995. The figures, from the National Office for Vocation, were revised this month to include data from enclosed female orders. They show a big jump among entrants to orders of priests, from 19 in 2011 to 30 last year.

The most widely used communication tool in Catholic Church is the parish bulletin, followed by a diocesan newspaper or magazine -- in print form -- which one in four adult Catholics have read in the past three months, CARA reports.

24 St. John of God Brothers Among Beatified Spanish Martyrs

Yesterday in Tarragona, Spain, about 500 martyrs killed for their faith during the Spanish Civil War were beatified, among them 24 St. John of God Brothers. Previously in 1992 71 Brothers were beatified. Most of these Brothers were very young and shot in different places in Spain. In his angelus address Pope Francis said, “ Today, in Terragona, Spain about 500 martyrs, killed for their faith during the Spanish civil war of the 1930s, are being proclaimed blessed. Let us praised the Lord for these courageous witnesses of his and through their intercession let us supplicate [God] to free the world from all violence.

Sister?Cathy Jones, religious life promoter at the National Office for Vocation, said the surge had been evident “across the whole range” of religious congregations, from Dominicans to Franciscans to Salvatorians.
