(Elise Harris - Catholic News Agency) - A Vatican official announced that in anticipation of the close of the Year of Faith, the relics of the first Bishop of Rome will be exposed with the aim of re-awakening the faith of the first Christians. “A final culminating sign will consist in the exposition for the first time of the relics that tradition recognizes as those of the apostle that gave his life for the Lord,” Archbishop Rino Fisichella stated in a Nov. 8 article published in the Vatican’s daily newspaper “L’Osservatore Romano.”

A Co Waterford native from Butlerstown, Fr Rufus worked to build peace between the divided Muslim and Christian communities in the Philippines by engaging them in a revolutionary inter faith dialogue effort. On 16 November 2013, a radio documentary will recall the slain priest. Remembering Rufus is part of the Different Voices Series and will be broadcast on Newstalk 106 on Saturday 16 November 2013 at 7AM and repeated on Sunday 17 November at 6PM.

Beatification of St John of God Martyrs at Tarragona, Spain

Three days of great celebrations have been held at Tarragona (Barcelona) in Spain for the Beatification of 522 Martyrs (bishops, priests, religious and lay men and women) during the religious persecution in Spain. The Brothers and Communities of the participants from the Order of St John of God (about 550) gathered at the end of the celebrations on Monday, October 14 for a Mass of Thanksgiving in the Chapel of the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu at Sant Boi de Llobregat in Barcelona, where the remains of 9 Martyrs were laid to rest.

24 St. John of God Brothers Among Beatified Spanish Martyrs

Yesterday in Tarragona, Spain, about 500 martyrs killed for their faith during the Spanish Civil War were beatified, among them 24 St. John of God Brothers. Previously in 1992 71 Brothers were beatified. Most of these Brothers were very young and shot in different places in Spain. In his angelus address Pope Francis said, “ Today, in Terragona, Spain about 500 martyrs, killed for their faith during the Spanish civil war of the 1930s, are being proclaimed blessed. Let us praised the Lord for these courageous witnesses of his and through their intercession let us supplicate [God] to free the world from all violence.
