new documentary launched in Dublin recently retells the life and circumstances of the murder of Irish missionary, Fr Gerry Roche. The production is the work of two Irish-American sisters who are students of filmography and journalism. Mary Catherine and Cornelia Brouder came to Ireland to study in the summer of 2009 and were shocked by the news of the killing of Fr Roche in a violent robbery on December 10 2009 in Kericho in western Kenya.

The book, written in Latin with 20 illustrations, originated in Rouen, France, which housed one of the most accomplished manuscript workshops of that era. Better yet, for a medievalist such as Gwara, the prayer book he uncovered in May while teaching a USC Maymester course on King Arthur was illuminated by Robert Boyvin. Boyvin was one of the premier French painters of his time, a renowned illuminator who was commissioned by wealthy and religious patrons intent upon owning one of the most popular books of the Middle Ages.

The twelve first-year seminarians include three from the diocese of Dublin, two from Down & Connor, two from Kerry and one each from Clogher, Cloyne, Ferns, Meath and Raphoe. Last year, 13 men began studies in Maynooth, while in 2010 the figure was 10 while in 2009, it was 24.

A challenge to Irish students to raise €55,000 in cash for a charity in West Africa may seem a near impossible task, but one group of schoolgirls proved that with the right motivation and much teamwork the feat could be achieved. Two very different international communities teamed up as Cork’s Scoil Mhuire secondary school girls spent two years raising money to fund a school and education programme in Sierra Leone. Both projects, organised by the St John of God Order, aimed to provide and improve education in the West African country, which is still suffering after a civil war that ended a decade ago.

Korean Province Embarks on New Project at Evergreen Village

On the 9th August last the Korean Province held the ground breaking ceremony for the new Respite Centre for persons with learning disability at Gaewha-dong, Kangseo-gu, Seoul. This project is part of a larger proposed project “the Evergreen Village”. On completion of the Respite Centre, it is hoped to embark on the second stage, the building of a Centre for older persons with learning disability.

The Festival will be held in the Archdiocese of Melbourne from Thursday December 5th to Saturday December 7th and gather up to 4000 young Catholics from year 9 students to those 25 years of age.
