Speaking to a conference organised by the Religious Life Institute in London on Saturday, Archbishop Joseph Tobin said that “religious orders are not simply an adornment of the Church they are an essential part of it.” This was, he emphasised, the conclusion of the debate surrounding the Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium.)

Seventeen Men Begin Studies at Allen Hall Seminary

Seventeen students have joined Allen Hall Seminary to train as priests this year - eleven of them will be hoping to serve in the Diocese of Westminster. The new academic term started on 11 September 2012. The men, who come from backgrounds as diverse as A&E nursing, social work, IT consultancy and stockbroking are to embark on a new journey led by their faith in Christ. The new year group includes members of religious orders and other dioceses across England. In total there are now 56 men training at Allen Hall.

new documentary launched in Dublin recently retells the life and circumstances of the murder of Irish missionary, Fr Gerry Roche. The production is the work of two Irish-American sisters who are students of filmography and journalism. Mary Catherine and Cornelia Brouder came to Ireland to study in the summer of 2009 and were shocked by the news of the killing of Fr Roche in a violent robbery on December 10 2009 in Kericho in western Kenya.

The book, written in Latin with 20 illustrations, originated in Rouen, France, which housed one of the most accomplished manuscript workshops of that era. Better yet, for a medievalist such as Gwara, the prayer book he uncovered in May while teaching a USC Maymester course on King Arthur was illuminated by Robert Boyvin. Boyvin was one of the premier French painters of his time, a renowned illuminator who was commissioned by wealthy and religious patrons intent upon owning one of the most popular books of the Middle Ages.
