Brother Fortunatus Thanhäuser - Possibility of Commencing Beatification Process

Berlin (Germany) 27/02/1918 Kattappana (India) 21/11/2005

Brother Fortunatus, left what was then the Rhineland Province to go to India to permanently establish, once again, the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God in India. He was initially accompanied by Brother Prakash Madappally, an Indian national, who had joined the Order in Germany, and was joined few months later by Brother Alfonse M. Hoerring and Brother Werenfried.

The health care complex of St John of God in Kattappana houses the mortal remains of Brother Fortunatus, whom many people, Brothers, Sisters, Co-workers, the sick, their family members and so many others, come to visit and venerate considering him to be a saint in every respect. And this is how the Hospitaller Order feels about him, which is why Bro. Elia Tripaldi, the Postulator General of the Order, has been to India to find out more about him and his life and work, and by agreement with Mgr Mathew, the diocesan Bishop, and with the Sisters of Charity of St John of God, to examine the possibility of beginning the beatification process which will have to begin with the diocesan process.

He therefore held various meetings with the Provincial Superior of the Hospitaller Brothers, with the Superior General of the Sisters of Charity of St John of God and her Council, which will also attended by the Brother General and the Bishop of the diocese in which Brother Fortunatus died.

The Brothers and Sisters of St John of God, together with other Brothers from Europe who had travelled there to attend the inauguration of the new hospital facilities, attended a Thanksgiving Mass on the morning of March 21 for the life and work of Brother Fortunatus on the place where his mortal remains lie.
