NRVC Study on Multiculturalism in Religious Life

Dr. Mary Gautier, senior research associate at Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, facilitated a working group meeting March 22 in Washington, DC to assist her in developing the design of the new NRVC-CARA “Study on the Integration of Multicultural and Multiethnic Candidates into Religious Life.” The goal of this research is to identify promising practices and resources to help religious institutes in welcoming and retaining candidates not of European descent. The working group includes:

Brother Jesus Alonso, CSC, Ph.D., Holy Cross College, Notre Dame, IN;
Sister Mary Charlotte Chandler, RSCJ, Ph.D., former director of the Center for the Study of Religious Life;
Sister Elsa Garcia, CDP, NRVC board member;
Rev. John Guthrie, USCCB Secretariat for Clergy, Consecrated Life, and Vocations, Washington, DC;
Father Sebastian Myladiyil, SVD, pastor, Immaculate Conception Parish, Liberty, TX;
Sister Anna Nguyen, SCC, LMSW, Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church, USCCB, Washington, DC;
Father Clarence Williams, CPPS, Ph.D., former senior director of Racial Equality and Diversity Initiatives, Catholic Charities USA

After conducting focus groups of newer entrants of various ethnicities, CARA will send a survey to religious institutes by early fall 2013. The study will be completed in the winter of 2014.
