Rights of People with Disabilities in Europe

On April 9, members of the St. John of God Order  attended a presentation of the 2013 edition of the European Yearbook on Disability Law.

The event took place on the premises of the European Parliament in Brussels under the patronage of the Irish Presidency of the Union and was chaired by the Irish MEPs, Mairead McGuinness and Marian Harkin.

The Yearbook on Disability Law is one of the main instruments used to monitor and enforce respect for the rights of people with disabilities within the European Union countries. Collecting and studying European legislation in this field is done synergistically by a number of different law entities and universities, headed by the National University of Ireland in Galway, and Maastricht University in the Netherlands. At the presentation of this new edition of the Yearbook the rapid development of legislation and case law on disabilities in Europe in recent years was illustrated, particularly following the EU’s ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.

The second part of the presentation was devoted to the respective responsibilities and powers of the Union and the Member States for implementing the United Nations Convention.
