Beatification of St John of God Martyrs at Tarragona, Spain

Three days of great celebrations have been held at Tarragona (Barcelona) in Spain for the Beatification of 522 Martyrs (bishops, priests, religious and lay men and women) during the religious persecution in Spain.

Twenty-four are Blessed Martyrs of the Hospitaller Order of St John of God:

 The ceremonies were inaugurated on Saturday afternoon, October 12, with Vespers presided over by the Archbishop (of Tarragona) Mgr Don Jaume Pujol Balcells, in Tarragona Cathedral, which is home to the relics of the proto-Martyr St Fructuosus, who died in 259 AD. They continued on Sunday, October 13 with the celebration of the Eucharist in the Tarragona University complex, at which Angelo Cardinal Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided.

 

A total of 522 Martyrs were beatified, 24 of whom were Brothers of the Hospitaller Order of St John of God.

The Holy Father, Pope Francis, also took part in the Celebrations through a live television link with what has been called ?the largest beatification ever to take place in Spain?.

The Mass in Tarragona was attended by 25,000 pilgrims, 8 cardinals, 97 bishops, 1,385 priests, 2,720 religious, 3,947 relatives of the Martyrs, and numerous civil authorities (Source: Spanish Bishops? Conference Press Office).

 The Brothers and Communities of the participants from the Order of St John of God (about 550) gathered at the end of the celebrations on Monday, October 14 for a Mass of Thanksgiving in the Chapel of the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu at Sant Boi de Llobregat in Barcelona, where the remains of 9 Martyrs were laid to rest. Mgr José Luis Redrado O.H. presided at the Mass, at which the concelebrants included, among other Brothers, the Prior General Brother Brother Jesús Etayo and Brother Pascual Piles, the Provincial of Aragon, the delegate of the diocesan Bishop, and other priests from the city and friends of the Order.  After the Mass, a fraternal meal concluded this great event in the beautiful gardens of the Provincial Curia.
